Andrew Bogut Named To Wooden Preseason All-America Team

Aug. 5, 2004

SALT LAKE CITY - Andrew Bogut, a 7-0 center/forward who will begin his sophomore year at the University of Utah this fall, has been named to the John R. Wooden Preseason All-American Team.

Bogut, along with the other Top 50 candidates named by the Wooden Award committee, will be considered for the Midseason Top 30 list and the national ballot for the John R. Wooden Player of the Year Award.

In his first season with the Utes, Bogut was named the 2003-04 Mountain West Conference Freshman of the Year and second team all-conference. The Melbourne, Australia, native was Utah's second-leading scorer (12.5 ppg), top rebounder (9.9 rpg) and best shot-blocker (44) last season. Bogut will play for the Australian national basketball team in the upcoming Olympic Summer Games in Athens, Greece.

Mississippi State's Lawrence Roberts and Providence's Ryan Gomes are the sole preseason candidates who were honored last year as members of the 2004 Wooden Award All-American Team. In addition to Roberts and Gomes, other preseason candidates that were mentioned in the running for last year's Wooden Award and were named to the official voting ballot include guards John Lucas Jr. (Oklahoma State), Julius Hodge (N.C. State) and B.J. Elder (Georgia Tech); and forwards Travis Diener (Marquette), Ike Diogu (Arizona State), Francisco Garcia (Louisville), Wayne Simien (Kansas) and Hakim Warrick (Syracuse).
