Haynie Named MWC Scholar-Athlete

SALT LAKE CITY - Mountain West Conference Scholar-Athlete Awards were conferred on 64 University of Utah student-athletes today by the conference office.

Kathryn Haynie represented the volleyball team. Her 3.95 grade point average in accounting is one of the best in the athletic department.

The MWC Scholar-Athlete Award is the highest academic honor bestowed by the conference. To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have completed at least two academic terms, while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better, and have participated in varsity competition in an NCAA-sponsored sport.

Both of Utah's track and field and football teams saw a school-best nine student-athletes recognized. That number is followed by the women's ski team, the women's soccer team and the men's swimming and diving team, each with eight honorees. Women's cross country (six), women's gymnastics (five) and men's skiing (three) followed, and the women's tennis and men's basketball teams each had two make the list. The baseball, women's basketball, men's tennis and volleyball teams all had one singled out.
